A major theme throughout all of the tmnt franchise, but especially recently, is the role of societal outsiders. In contrast to the lonely gloom present in the Mutant Mayhem movie (scenes of bright, lively, and crowded groups of people while the turtles lurk in the lightless shadows just out of sight), Rise of the TMNT as a comedic cartoon is a more joyful portrayal of the life of the outsider. The lair is covered in bright lights and colors in contrast to the dark sewers of other iterations--Rottmnt is about taking what makes you different and finding joy in it, making a home of it despite how others may shun you to keep you out. Uniquely, the turtles were also able to find the Yokai, more societal outsiders like them with whom they could find community. I do not mean to say that it isn't a bad thing that the turtles are made to be outsiders in Rottmnt, but the message of finding joy where you are can help a little bit in those types of situations.

since the show was canceled(???) after season 2 and the movie brought back in a lot of interest (especially considering the poor treatment the show got from the network, i didnt even know it existed until, like, the last year or so), a lot of the excitement for the show takes place w/fan content, creating a focus on more creative endeavours. the movie also leaves space for interpretation as it opens in the future and many characters appear to be dead. the audience is not given any explanation as to what happened between the kraang initially invading and this point, so the fandom has taken liberties with the aspects of the show to great extent. the artwork and writing out there is very impressive, especially when inspiration is taken from other fans (crossovers between fanworks!)
